Must-sees if you’re visiting for a weekend

If you’re looking for things to do in Amboise in two days, here’s an ideal itinerary:

Day 1 – Renaissance & Loire

  • Royal Château
  • Clos Lucé
  • Dinner overlooking the Loire

The Royal Castle of Amboise

Overlooking the Loire, the Royal Castle of Amboise was a major residence of the kings of France during the Renaissance.

The terraced gardens offer one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the river.

⏱️ 1.5 to 2 hours 👤 Couples/families

💡 Arrive when it opens during high season.

Day 2 – Castle & vineyards

  • Chenonceau Castle (20 mins)
  • Discover a Touraine wine cellar

The Château de Chenonceau

Nicknamed the ‘château des Dames’ (château of ladies), the Château de Chenonceau is one of the most iconic in the Loire Valley. Built over the Cher River, it is famous for its gallery spanning the river and for the women who have marked its history: Diane de Poitiers, Catherine de Médicis and Louise de Lorraine.

Its French gardens, refined architecture and unique location make it a particularly elegant place to visit.

⏱️ 2 to 3 hours 👤 Couples/families 💰 Admission fee

💡 Tip: arrive as soon as it opens in high season and allow time for the gardens, which are often less crowded than the main gallery.

Let’s recap! Things to do in Saumur depending on your interests…

…with children?

Amboise is a very family-friendly destination.

The top 5 family activities:

  • 🎨 The Château du Clos Lucé (interactive tour in the park)
  • 🚲 Safe cycling along the Loire à Vélo cycle route
  • 🏰 The Royal Château of Amboise
  • 🐘 Beauval Zoo (45 mins)
  • 🚤 Traditional boat trip on the Loire

💡 Tip: alternate cultural visits in the morning with more relaxed activities in the afternoon.

…for a couple’s getaway?

The Loire Valley is particularly well suited to couples. Here are our ideas for a romantic weekend:

  • Sunset on the quays of Amboise
  • Wine tasting in a troglodytic cellar
  • Visit to the Château de Chenonceau
  • Dinner overlooking the Loire
  • Walk through the vineyards of Montlouis-sur-Loire

…if you enjoy wine and local produce?

Around Amboise, wine tourism is an integral part of the experience.

⏱️ 1 to 1.5 hours 👤 Couples / foodies

🍇 Les Caves Ambacia

Housed in troglodytic cellars, they offer guided tours, educational tastings and food and wine pairing experiences (Touraine goat’s cheese, local charcuterie).

A true immersion in the Loire region, while discovering tips on how to better enjoy and pair the different wines on offer.

💡 Tip: go in the late afternoon and arrange for a designated driver.

🍷 Plou & Fils

A family estate for several generations, ideal for understanding the Touraine-Amboise appellation. Here, the experience is more intimate: you can discover the vines, the grape varieties (Chenin, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon), and then the cellars dug into the tuffeau stone. The tasting is educational and accessible, even for novices.

💡 Tip: combine it with a walk through the surrounding vineyards. The Loire landscape takes on its full meaning when you understand the link between the soil, the river and the wine.

Two complementary atmospheres

  • Caves Ambacia: spectacular troglodytic setting, structured food and wine experience.

  • Plou & Fils: a more family-oriented, direct approach, focused on the vineyard.

Both offer a different understanding of the Touraine-Amboise terroir if you have the time and desire to do several tastings.

…within an hour or so?

  • Chenonceau Castle (20 mins)
  • Tours (25 mins), with its Place Plumereau, lively banks of the Loire throughout the summer, and pretty historic centre
  • Blois (45 mins)
  • Beauval Zoo (45 mins)
  • Chambord Castle (1 hour)

…when it rains?

  • Royal Castle
  • Clos Lucé
  • Troglodytic caves (Ambacia)
  • Balzac Museum in Saché
  • 💡 The châteaux of the Loire retain all their majesty under cloudy skies, so make sure you’re well prepared for a walk!
